Ford has issued a recall for about 25,000 Mustangs from model years 2019 and 2020 equipped with manual transmissions. A glitch related to the transmission can disable the rearview camera, reverse lights, and some driver assistance features like forward collision warning and blind-spot warning.
Ford added a rev-matching function to its manual gearbox for the 2019 model year. In a few driving scenarios, Ford has found a sensor that detects gear position and can send an “unintended fault signal” to the powertrain control module — the onboard computer that controls many engine and transmission functions.
The error can disable some unrelated functions — everything from the backup camera to the traction control.
Ford recalibrated the rev-matching system for the 2021 model year. So although later models also have the feature, they don’t appear to have the problem.
Dealers will fix the problem with a software update. The fix is free.
Ford built all recalled cars between January 8, 2018, and December 16, 2020. But it can be difficult for owners to determine on their own whether the recall affects their car.
