Electric-only automaker Lucid has issued a recall for 5,251 Air sedans from model years 2022 and 2023 because they can lose drive power.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the issue concerns overprotective safety software. If the vehicle senses any loose connection, a safety mechanism separates certain electrical connections to prevent injury to a technician repairing parts. That action can cause the vehicle to lose all power, even in motion.
The company says it has updated the connectors’ manufacturing processes and has seen “zero loss of power incidents” since the changes. However, some Air sedans manufactured before that update could still be susceptible.
A software update fixes the problem by ensuring the connections will not open until the car stops so owners can get to safety before the connections separate.
Most vehicles have already received the software through an over-the-air update. But owners who have opted to turn off automatic updates “will be notified by email and first-class mail with instructions to update their software to the latest version and that they may contact Lucid Customer Care or a Lucid Service Center if they need assistance with software updates.”
