Infiniti has recalled 7,222 vehicles because their driveshafts can break, causing a total loss of drive power. The recall affects only 2-wheel-drive versions of the:
- 2011-2013 Infiniti M56
- 2012-2013 Infiniti M35 Hybrid
- 2014-2018 Infiniti Q50
- 2014-2019 Infiniti Q70
- 2014-2018 Infiniti Q70 Hybrid
- 2015-2019 Infiniti Q70L
Infiniti tells government safety regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “Due to a supplier specification change, certain Infiniti vehicles may contain a propeller shaft with reduced fatigue strength.” Over time, the shaft can fracture from the daily pressures of everyday use.
With a broken drive shaft, a vehicle won’t move when you want it to and could move when you don’t want it to. Engine power doesn’t pass to the wheels, and the car can’t enter Park mode.
Drivers will receive no warning as the problem develops, Infiniti says.
Dealers will replace the drive shaft free of charge. Infiniti says the repair “may take up to 1 hour to complete,” but we would advise owners to be prepared to leave their cars at the dealership for a full day.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of cars on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to determine if your car is one of them.
