Hyundai is recalling about 460,000 2015-2017 Sonata sedans and 2016-2017 Sonata Hybrids because a software glitch can cause their turn signals to reverse.
The problem can develop intermittently. The blinkers sometimes work correctly and sometimes signal on the wrong side of the car. Hyundai has seen no reports of accidents caused by the defect.
This is the second turn signal recall we’ve seen in just a week. The previous recall affected the 2015-2017 Kia Sedona minivan. In both cases, the problem appears to be with the software controlling the smart junction box. Dealers can fix it with a simple software update.
Kia and Hyundai are both operated by South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company and share many platforms and parts between their vehicles. So, this may not be the last time we hear from the 2015-2017 Hyundai smart junction box.
Dealers will fix the problem for free with a software patch.
For now, owners should be aware that when the wrong signal blinks on the outside of the car, it also blinks on the dash. So Sonata owners should check the instrument bezel to verify that the car signals what they want it to before beginning a turn or lane change.
Many cars are recalled, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your car has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
