Recall Alert: Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid profile viewHyundai has issued a recall for about 38,000 Elantra Hybrid sedans from model years 2021 through 2023 because they can move forward unexpectedly when the driver releases the brake pedal.

Hyundai tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a software problem can result in “unintended acceleration after release of the brake pedal.” The company says that “service brake functionality is unaffected and remains fully operational,” so drivers should be able to stop the creep forward by stepping on the brake. But it’s easy to see how a car that moves when you don’t tell it to could trigger an accident.

Hyundai says owners “can continue driving these vehicles as the vehicle’s brake systems are fully operational and effective in slowing the vehicle.”

Dealers will fix the problem with a software update.
