Recall Alert: GM Recalls 285,000 Vehicles Over Airbag Warning Light

General Motors is recalling more than 285,000 vehicles from the 2021 model year. Due to a software problem, GM says, the airbag malfunction warning light on these cars might not illuminate when it should.

The recall affects the 2021 Buick Envision; Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade, and Escalade ESV; Chevrolet Corvette, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

Though it concerns airbag safety, this recall is not related to the massive Takata airbag recall that has affected more than 100 million vehicles worldwide.

Instead, GM tells the government in a recall report that a software fault in these vehicles means that the airbag malfunction indicator lamp can only illuminate every other ignition cycle. Though GM is aware of no problems related to the cars’ airbags, the vehicle might not warn the driver if one were to develop.

Dealers will fix the problem with a simple software update. The update can be sent to some of the affected cars over the air, requiring no dealership visit. However, owners must bring other models in for a repair that should only take minutes.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
