Ford has issued a recall for 24,950 F-250, F-350, and F-450 trucks from model years 2023 and 2024 because water can get into their tailgate camera assemblies, shutting down the image.
These trucks have a supplementary backup camera built into the top of the tailgate to help drivers back up safely when the tailgate is down. Ford says the primary camera is fine, but some tailgate-top cameras were installed “out of tolerance.” Water can leak into them, shutting them down.
Drivers might see “a blue or black screen or intermittent loss of rear-camera display while the vehicle is in reverse,” Ford says. A “reverse brake assist unavailable” can also appear in the instrument cluster.
To fix the problem, dealers will replace the tailgate top camera, wiring harness, and some sensors that help power the parking assist system. Recall repairs are always free.
