Recall Alert: Ford Explorer Roof Rail Covers Could Fly Off

Ford is recalling about 616,000 Explorer SUVs from model years 2016 through 2019 because their roof rail covers can fly off at speed. We probably don’t need to explain why you don’t want that to happen.

The roof rail covers are held in by retention pins that can loosen over time. Should they fail, the rail covers could fly off into traffic. The recall affects Explorers in Base, Police, XLT, or Sport trim level with Black painted, Absolute Black painted, or Silver-painted roof rail covers.

The recall does not apply to metal-plated roof rail covers. If you don’t know whether your roof rail covers are plated or painted, watch the mail for a notice, or call your local Ford dealership to ask.

Owners might hear increased wind noise if their roof rail covers are loose.

Dealers will replace the retaining pins with a new design and replace any roof rail covers that appear damaged. Recall repairs are always free.

Many cars are recalled at some point in their useful lives. Automakers try to contact every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair. But they rarely reach them all, leaving millions of cars driving with recalled parts. Check whether your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
