Recall Alert: Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator

Ford and its Lincoln luxury division have recalled 391 midsize SUVs because their rearview cameras can fail to display an image.

Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:

Ford tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that certain SUVs may lose their rearview camera image if they exceed ten mph in reverse. Other Explorers and Aviators received a software update that prevented the problem, but the company may have shipped a handful to customers with pre-production software.

The company knows of no accidents or injuries related to the problem, which inspectors found at the factory.

The company plans to fix the issue through an over-the-air software update, so owners will not need to bring their vehicles into a dealership for repair. However, Ford says owners are welcome to have the update completed at a dealership if they prefer.

By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
