Ford is recalling about 775,000 Explorer SUVs from model years 2013 through 2017. The vehicles, Ford says, “may experience a seized cross-axis ball joint that may cause a fractured rear suspension toe link.” That would make the vehicles difficult to steer and could lead to a crash. Drivers could hear a clunk noise as the problem develops, Ford says, or notice a misaligned rear wheel.
This appears to be an expansion of a more limited recall Ford issued last November to address the same problem.
The recall affects Explorers located in what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration labels “high-corrosion states.” Those are states that experience heavy winter weather and substantial road salt use as well as high humidity.
Dealers will inspect the cross-axis ball joint. If necessary, they will replace the cross-axis ball joint/knuckle. In every case, they will replace the toe links with a redesigned part. Recall repairs are always free of charge.
