General Motors has recalled about 3,900 heavy-duty pickups because they can suffer a “total loss of steering control” due to a defective steering gear shaft.
Recalled models include some, but not all, copies of the:
GM tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the steering gear shaft in the trucks “may contain a supplier manufacturing defect that may result in a fracture.” With legendary bureaucratic understatement, the company notes that “If the steering gear shaft fractures and the steering arm becomes disconnected, the driver will be unable to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”
The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem. It was discovered by factory technicians conducting safety inspections.
Dealers will inspect the steering gear and replace it if necessary.
