Recall Alert: BMW i4, i7, iX EVs

BMW has issued a recall alert for about 14,000 electric cars because they can lose power suddenly, creating the risk of a crash.

Affected models include:

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW explains that software in an electronic control unit can “sporadically” misdiagnose problems and trigger a reset that shuts down power flow from the high-voltage battery. That could stall the car at speed.

When it happens, drivers can restart the car and continue driving, assuming no one hits them. But you don’t want to lose forward motion in traffic suddenly. BMW is not aware of any accidents related to the problem.

Dealers will fix the problem by updating software in the electronic control unit. Recall repairs are always free.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
