BMW has issued a recall for about 9,200 examples of its flagship 7 Series sedan and i7 electric car from model years 2023-2024 because a safety system may not properly engage.
BMW tells National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a system that detects whether the driver’s hands are on the steering wheel “may not have been attached correctly, resulting in an inoperative hands-on detection system.”
Both cars are designed to bring themselves to a safe stop if the driver is unresponsive. That system may not function properly, BMW says, if the hand detector doesn’t work. In a worst-case scenario, that could leave the car driving with an unresponsive driver.
BMW says it knows of no accidents or injuries related to the condition, which was discovered during a quality inspection.
Dealers will inspect the system and connect it properly if necessary. By law, dealers never charge for recall-related repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your car has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
