Recall Alert: Audi A6, A7 Variants

Audi A7Audi has expanded one of the weirder recalls in recent automotive history. The German automaker has added another 50,000 vehicles to the list of cars recalled because a spilled drink can leave them inoperable.

The recall now includes the following:

An engine control computer known as the Gateway Control Module (GCM) sits under the rear seat of each of the cars. If it gets wet, Audi says, it switches to a failsafe “limp home mode” that drastically reduces engine power.

Owners have come to Audi with reports of spilled liquids in the back seat triggering the limp mode.

Audi dealers will correct the problem by installing a protective cover that will keep spills from triggering the failsafe. The repair, like all recall repairs, is free.

Audi issued a similar recall covering Q5 and SQ5 and 2021-2022 Q5 Sportback and SQ5 Sportback SUVs last year. In that case, the company also needed to reinforce some improperly glued underbody seams. Audi says that repair is not necessary for these cars.
