Honda and its Acura luxury division have recalled nearly a quarter of a million cars because they may have improperly cast parts that could lead to a sudden and complete engine failure.
Recalled vehicles include the:
- 2015-2020 Acura TLX
- 2016-2020 Acura MDX
- 2016 Honda Pilot
- 2017 Honda Ridgeline
- 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey
- 2018-2019 Honda Pilot
- 2019 Honda Ridgeline
All of the recalled vehicles use the same engine, a 3.5-liter V6.
Honda tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “Due to a manufacturing defect of the engine crankshaft, the connecting rod bearing can prematurely wear and seize.” An engine with a seized connecting rod can “and run improperly, stall, stop while driving, and/or not start, increasing the risk of a fire, crash or injury.”
The company says it knows of no accidents or deaths related to the problem but has received at least 1,450 warranty claims.
Dealers will inspect the engine. If they find parts out of specification, they may replace the parts or the entire engine, depending on severity.
