Recall Alert: 2017 Hyundai Tucson, Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai is recalling nearly 100,000 of its 2017 Sonata Hybrid and Tucson models due to a defect that can result in an engine failure or fire.

The cars are all powered by 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engines, which may have defective rod bearings. The bearings may wear prematurely. This can cause the engine to stall during operation. In extreme cases, a damaged connecting rod can puncture the engine block and cause the engine to leak oil onto hot components, leading to a fire.

Dealers will inspect the engines for bearing damage. If dealers find no damage, they will install a software update for a new knock detection system to warn of any future damage. If they find damage, dealers may opt to replace the entire engine. Recall repairs are always free.

Automakers try to notify owners about recalls, but they don’t always succeed. Millions of Americans drive cars with known safety defects they could have repaired for free. Check whether your car has ever been recalled with our easy recall center.
