Several luxury automakers have bespoke design units dedicated to producing unique editions of their cars. They generally build beautiful one-off editions for wealthy buyers who want something utterly unique. But, now and then, they let their designers play.
That’s what Range Rover’s SV division has been up to. The custom shop has announced a series of “five exquisitely crafted curations inspired by ancient mythology and the cosmos.”
Designers build each from the Range Rover Sport SV, an opulent 5-seat SUV with serious off-road capability and sports car speed. The Sport is capable of a 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.6 seconds thanks to its 626-horsepower twin-turbo V8. It can also travel over very rough terrain thanks to a high-performance adaptive air suspension and terrain response system.
The designers haven’t messed with those aspects.
Instead, they’ve given each model unique finishes inside and out, evoking moons and planets in our solar system. Range Rover hasn’t listed pricing, but the only “curated” model of the Range Rover Sport currently listed on the company’s website starts at $104,480 (including the $1,625 delivery fee). These are likely higher due to their unique nature.
Gaea
The collection starts at home, with a model inspired by Earth. The Gaea uses a Green Terra Matte exterior paint, with a Narvik Black roof. Carbon Bronze brake calipers add an elemental flourish. Inside, it features “a Caraway Windsor leather with Kvadrat steelcut backboards, Natural Brown Silver Birch wooden finishers, and a tonal stitch.”
Theia
Theia is named for a mythical titan and a hypothetical planet that, some astronomers believe, may have played a role in the formation of Earth and its moon. Range Rover designers gave its namesake sport utility vehicle a “a warm‑toned Ilmenite Grey Satin paint finish with a hint of metallic flake, inspired by the moon.”
Inside, they used “dramatic Ebony and Pimento Windsor Leather with additional Pimento contrast binding on the carpet mats.” They then created a symbol meant to represent “Theia’s watchful eye, the moon’s craters, or a constellation,” which they placed on the headrests and center console.
Io
Io gets its name from a moon of Jupiter known for its heavy volcanic activity. Accordingly, SV designers gave the Range Rover Sport SV Io a lava-like exterior it calls “Cyllene Gloss.” A gloss twill carbon fiber hood and tailpipes lend an obsidian-like effect. Inside, “clients can choose from Ebony and Lunar Windsor leather, with 3D knit seats, and Satin Twill carbon fiber seat backboards and seat collar bezels.”
Vega
Vega is named for a star found in the constellation Lyra.
The blue gloss exterior, Range Rover says, was “developed from a reference of the star itself.” It wears a gloss twill carbon fiber contrast hood and 23-inch wheels. The cabin features “Ebony and Perlino leather seats” embossed with a wing symbol representing the constellation, which is often shown as an eagle or swan. The color is “complemented by a Natural Cream Ash Burr finisher on the cupholders in addition to Ebony Kvadrat Steelcut backboards on the seats.”
Sol
Our own sun inspired the last of the collection. The Sol uses an Aurora Yellow Gloss finish, “a tribute to the Aurora Borealis phenomenon hinted at with its greenish‑yellow color.” Inside, a leather-free interior features Ebony upholstery with contrasting yellow stitching.
Land Rover hasn’t said how many of each it plans to build. But their nature as bespoke projects means these are likely special-order vehicles that will go quickly.
