Pricey Recall: $4 Million Bugatti Chiron Needs New Tires Every 1,875 Miles

Life is hard for Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport owners.

They shell out more than $4.1 million for a car, only to learn that it needs to go to the shop for new tires every 1,875 miles. You’re probably better off buying 292 Chevy Sparks with your money.

Bugatti has issued a recall for every Chiron Pur Sport ever built – including all nine sold in the U.S. – because their ultra-rare tires are falling apart.

The Buwhatti Whonow?

Because you may not be familiar with the car, we should explain: The Bugatti Chiron may be the world’s fastest production car. That title is usually in dispute. The Chiron is the replacement for a previous record holder, the Bugatti Veyron. Bugatti has thus far declined to perform a high-speed test run in the presence of any officiating body. So no one knows the car’s top speed.

The company did achieve a would-be record-setting speed of 304 mph in a modified version back in 2019. But that car was lengthened and fitted with aerodynamic enhancements that aren’t available to poor, plebian private owners.

The Pur Sport is an enhanced Chiron with weight-saving tricks like magnesium wheels and titanium brake pads (they shave 1.1 pounds off each wheel). It carries a sticker a little more than $1 million over the nearly $3 million price tag of the common man’s Chiron.

Lots and Lots of Free Tires

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Bugatti explains, “On one prototype Pur Sport vehicle, some cracks have been observed on the rear Pur Sport tires.” The tires “are specific to the Chiron Pur Sport model line,” and probably not in stock at your local tire shop.

According to tire manufacturer Michelin, the tires should be good for 2,500 miles of driving. But, just to be safe, Bugatti plans to replace them every 1,875, or 1.5 years – whichever comes first. The company is working on a permanent replacement tire that will enable owners to drive a longer distance. Recall repairs are always free.
