Polestar Offers Lease With 5-Month Nevermind Clause

2023 Polestar 2

You tried going electric. It wasn’t for you. So, after five months, you returned the car and walked away with no penalty.

That’s the scenario electric vehicle builder Polestar offers with a new lease program with a 5-month opt-out clause.

The Polestar Flexible Lease program is available immediately only on the brand’s most popular car, the Polestar 2 sedan. But the company says it “applies to upcoming Polestar models” as well, though none are in dealerships yet.

About Polestar

Polestar started as an independent Volvo racing team and tuner shop. Volvo bought the company in 2015, where it produced high-performance versions of the Swedish automaker’s cars and contributed to performance-styled editions and trim levels, following a journey not unlike Mercedes-Benz’s tuner, AMG. Polestar separated from the mothership into a separate electric vehicle (EV) company in 2018, though it maintains close ties to Volvo. Chinese auto conglomerate Geely owns both Polestar and Volvo.

The only Polestar you can buy immediately is the Polestar 2, a rugged-looking all-electric fastback sedan with up to 320 miles of range and a starting price of $48,900 (plus a $1,400 destination fee). Its Polestar 1 hybrid performance coupe has sold out and ended its production run.

The company has started taking reservations for its Polestar 3 SUV, with deliveries planned for next year. The Polestar 4 – a sporty, low-slung “SUV coupe” with the odd design feature of no rear window – will follow.

The Cancelable Lease

“Unlike a traditional lease offer, the Polestar Flexible Lease program provides customers – after just five months and five payments – the flexibility to either keep their lease or opt out,” Polestar says.

The company’s website advertises the lease with 24 monthly payments of $349 and a $5,000 down payment.
