Nissan, Infiniti to Let Lessees Buy More Miles

Leasing rather than buying a new car can mean lower monthly payments. But it’s not the right solution for everyone, partly because leases have mileage limits. Going over your miles typically means a costly payment at the end of your lease term.

Drivers sometimes sign up for a lease based on their current lifestyle, then see their driving needs change. A new commute, a need to visit family more often, or anything else that sees you driving more than you’d planned can cost you.

Nissan and its Infiniti luxury brand have a solution.

The company announced today an extended plan that lets lessees buy additional miles up front, rather than paying a penalty.

The program “allows eligible lessees from both brands to purchase additional miles up to 30 days prior to lease end.” Lessees pay $0.10 per mile if they order in advance, compared to $0.25 per mile if they take them as a penalty at lease end.

Nissan initially launched its SignatureFLEX lease in 2022 but has extended it “to include drivers with legacy leases” maturing on Feb. 1, 2025, or after.

For now, the company says, customers can buy additional miles “through the NMAC and IFS web portals or mobile apps.” Later in the 2025 model year, the company will add an in-car purchase option to car touchscreens.
