The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Kelley Blue Book offer online search that gives owners and would-be owners access to the current recall status on virtually any 15-year old or newer vehicle in the U.S.
The Kelley Blue Book Recall Check by VIN can be found here. To use the NHTSA tool at www.safercar.gov/vinlookup, enter individual VIN (Vehicle Information Number) for the same results. You’ll get details of any potential safety issues after the search concludes. If there are none, the data box will indicate “No Open Recalls.”
NHTSA also requires all major vehicle and motorcycle manufacturers to provide VIN search for uncompleted recalls on their own websites. They must update that information on a weekly basis. The official NHTSA site does not cover recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers. These include some ultra-luxury brands and specialty applications. The site may not list recalls over 15 years old or very recent recalls that may have certain VIN numbers still pending.
