Toyota 4Runner fans need two things in life: mud on the tires and a roll-down tailgate window. They’re naturally nervous, as Toyota has promised a new 4Runner soon (something that happens about once a generation). People who buy an SUV last redesigned in 2009 may not love change.
But Toyota has ’em covered.
The automaker today released two bits of teaser info about the 2025 4Runner – a photo with the tailgate window down and, just in case that was ambiguous, a video of the tailgate window going down.
The shots show a boxy, almost 80s-inspired design theme, with a glorious retro T-O-Y-O-T-A logo across the tailgate. When the window lowers, you can see through to a large landscape-mounted touchscreen high on the dashboard.
The ethos of the design splits the difference between two other off-road models the company builds – the latest Land Cruiser and the new Lexus GX. Both wear a similar blocky design theme. We expect the next 4Runner will ride on the platform Toyota created for the all-new 2024 Tacoma and come in a hybrid drivetrain as almost every Toyota product now does.
A note on the video says the SUV will debut next Tuesday, so we’ll know more soon.
