Unveiled at the opening of its new Research & Development Center in Beijing, the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV could well provide an early look at an upcoming subcompact crossover positioned below the new GLA-Class. Carrying an internal "G-Code" designation, Mercedes is using this diminutive 2+2 to officially acknowledge "the possible expansion of the previously uniform SUV off-roader family" with a vehicle that "illustrates the possibilities of a more sporty and dynamic on-road line."

Visually, the Concept Coupe SUV embodies a bolder take on the mini-ute theme. Finished in M-B’s signature Alu-Beam paint, this 5-door liftback is shorter but lower and wider than a GLA-Class. It features coach-style rear doors and rides on huge 22-inch wheels wrapped in 305/45 tires. Scaled to take on would-be rivals like the Mini Countryman and upcoming Audi Q1, this distinctive one-off also has full LED lighting plus illumination for its grille and integrated side sills. The assertive front fascia treatment is paired with a tail that borrows cues from the new S-Class Coupe.
Electric scooters included
Inside, the Concept Coupe SUV/G-Code features a stylish design that matches outstanding flexibility with advanced technology. Its articulated steering wheel/column and oversize center display neatly retract into the dash when the vehicle is parked while its rear seats fold flat to create a generous load floor and an extended split console offers docking ports for smartphones and various other devices. For short treks in the city, there’s even a pair of electric scooters that stow away under the rear cargo floor

While M-B didn’t detail the powertrain elements, it’s believed the Concept Coupe SUV matches a hydrogen-burning turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels, supplemented with electric motors at the rear. The vehicle has an air suspension fully integrated with the drivetrain and a variable "Dynamic Select Control" system that allows for four unique, driver-programmable power transmission modes.
