Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for more than 143,000 cars and SUVs because their fuel pumps can fail, causing their engines to shut down while driving. In some cases, owners have been unable to restart their cars.
The list of recalled vehicles is long. It includes some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2021-2023 AMG GT
- 2021-2023 C-Class
- 2021-2023 CLS
- 2021-2023 E-Class coupe, convertible, and sedan
- 2021-2022 G-Class
- 2021-2023 GLC
- 2021-2023 GLE
- 2021-2023 GLS
- 2021-2023 S-Class
- 2022-2023 SL
The problem is that the impeller in the fuel pump can deform and get stuck against the wall of the chamber it spins in, Mercedes tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the impeller can’t spin, it can’t pump fuel into the engine. So, the engine stalls.
Mercedes says the driver may notice the engine running rough or a warning light in the instrument cluster before the failure. The company says it “is not aware of any claims of injury, crashes, or death worldwide due to this malfunction.”
Dealers will fix the problem by replacing the fuel pump. Recall repairs are always free.
