The next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class was revealed last month, with one of the most sumptuous interiors we’ve seen at its price point. Still, the redesigned model range features only 4-cylinder engines. That last bit is a radical change for the company that builds some of the smoothest 6- and 8-cylinder engines ever made. But the new philosophy appears to be here to stay. Now, even the ultra-powerful AMG version of the C-Class will carry just four cylinders.
A report in the U.K.’s Car magazine has the details. Instead of the twin-turbocharged V8 AMG models typically boast, Car claims the 2022 C63 AMG will instead employ an inline 4-cylinder boosted in just about every way imaginable. These add-ons include an electrically-assisted turbocharger and an electric-starter generator, which can send a surge of power to temporarily boost acceleration.
Power goes through a 9-speed automatic transmission to the 4matic all-wheel-drive system. There will also be a small electric motor helping to turn only the rear axle.
Total system output clocks in at 550 horsepower – 47 more than the V8 in the outgoing AMG model of the C-Class. It also boasts an ideal 50-50 weight distribution.
We expect Mercedes to officially unveil the C63 within the next few months, so hope to be able to confirm the report soon.
