McLaren Automotive and BMW Group announced a project that will see the two automakers work with four other partners to develop new combustion technologies for use in future engines. The program aims to increase output of these engines beyond what is currently possible while reducing their CO2 emissions levels. The project, which is supported and partially funded by the UK Government though the Advanced Propulsion Center, also will bolster the UK’s own expertise in developing and producing next-gen low-CO2 internal combustion engines.

As the lead player in this effort, McLaren will be working directly with its current engine manufacturing partner, Riccardo, as well as with BMW. The other members of this high-tech syndicate include casting and technology expert Grainer and Worrell Ltd, composite specialist Lentus Composites and the University of Bath, which will provide R&D expertise on optimizing the efficiency of internal combustion engine systems.

Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive, Mike Flewitt, noted that the project plays to the strengths of all six partners and is confident it will further bolster his firm’s reputation when it comes to creating exceptional powerplants. “We will continue to independently design and build our own engines, and the benefits of this project will help us accelerate the development of our next generation of powertrain, as confirmed in our recently-announced Track22 business plan.”
