Mazda is recalling about 260,000 Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks from model years 2004 through 2007. The vehicles have a Mazda logo attached to the steering wheel that may become brittle over time. If the airbag behind one of those logos deploys, it could shatter the badge and send hard plastic fragments flying into the cabin at high speed.
Mazda dealers will replace the badge with a less shatter-prone one at no cost.
Curiously, this is the second flying-emblem recall we’ve seen this year. Chevrolet dealers had to perform a similar repair on Camaro muscle cars in April.
Mazda says it is aware of at least eight incidents in which shattered emblem fragments may have hit drivers. The company also faces two lawsuits in the U.S. that may involve the issue, according to trade publication Automotive News.
Recall repairs are always free. But many people drive cars subject to safety recalls they haven’t heard about. Manufacturers try to reach every owner with a recall order, but the notification doesn’t always get to everyone that needs it. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
