The planet’s most popular sports car established a new Guinness World Record for the longest parade of driving Mazdas this past weekend when 683 Mazda MX-5 Miatas converged on a proving ground facility at Lelystad in the Netherlands to take part in the MAX-5 2013 event. Using the RDW Test Center as its base of operations, this latest gathering of the faithful handily eclipsed the last such attempt, which set the existing benchmark by drawing 459 MX-5s to Essen, Germany, in 2010.

President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe Jeff Guyton attended MAX-5 2013, taking part in the 9.3-mile street drive and later receiving the official certificate of recognition from Guinness World Records adjudicator Pravin Patel. For the past 13 years, the MX-5 has remained the world’s best-selling 2-seat sports car. Nearly 45 percent of those vehicles were marketed here in the U.S. With over 900,000 units sold since April 1989 when the MX-5 Miata first went on sale, the next step will be to break a million. That accomplishment is expected to happen sometime within the next year.
