2018 Mazda CX-9 Buyer’s Guide

Above Average: Styling, driving dynamics, powertrain response

Below Average: Tight third row, no CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, firm ride

Consensus: The 3-row SUV for drivers, but not necessarily for everyone

The Sportiest, Most Stylish Family Hauler in its Class

Mazda’s gorgeous, totally redesigned second-generation CX-9 is lighter, more upscale and more tech-savvy than the previous model. It returns for its second year with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers more accessible oomph than the adequate but dated V6 it replaced, and also offers significantly improved fuel economy. For 2018, Mazda makes more safety equipment standard.

Even in a three-row people mover that will never be asked to carve a canyon road or attack a looping highway on-ramp, driving dynamics matter. Good steering feel, braking behavior and throttle response combine to increase driver confidence, comfort and satisfaction, whether running errands or family road-tripping. Few automakers put as much emphasis on driving feel as Mazda, and even fewer midsize SUVs are as enjoyable to drive as the Mazda CX-9.

Fun for the Whole Family

From our 2018 Mazda CX-9 expert review: “Despite its size, the CX-9 feels amazingly light on its feet, with responsive steering and a suspension that begs to be pushed hard, especially when the road begins to twist and turn. Although the CX-9’s turbocharged 4-cylinder isn’t the most powerful engine in its class, its 310 lb-ft of torque are more than sufficient to rapidly move this SUV when needed.”

Compare and Contrast

We recently pitted the CX-9 against some of the heaviest hitters in the segment, taking six midsize SUVs on a lengthy journey through deserts and mountains, over winding roads and highways. See how all of these new and recently updated models fared in our Midsize SUV comparison.

Consumers Say

KBB visitor and CX-9 owner Cam has this to say about Mazda’s midsize SUV: “It drives wonderfully, is quiet, comfortable and looks so good it’s hard not think of it competing with more luxurious brands such as Acura, Audi and Volvo. For $20,000 less than those similarly equipped, it’s a bargain. Pros: Beautiful design inside and out. Good power with turbo 2.5 from a standstill into highway speeds. Decent gas mileage. HUD is really useful on this vehicle. Cons: No pano sunroof. No cooled front seats. No Apple carplay/Android auto.” Read more Mazda CX-9 consumer reviews.
