Lincoln has recalled 35,328 Navigator SUVs from model years 2015 through 2017 because their side mirrors can catch fire. You read that right.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “The light-emitting diode (LED) logo lamps within the driver side and passenger side exterior mirror assemblies may short circuit without tripping the short detection threshold.” That can trigger an electrical fire in the mirror housing.
Lincoln says it knows of at least four warranty claims, two field reports, and three customer service reports of mirror housing fires.
The logo light is purely decorative, so Lincoln will adopt the easy solution to this problem — dealers will simply disconnect the wire. Owners will lose the logo lamps, but they’ll also lose the fire risk.
