The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is an all-new model, but there’s good reason if its name sounds familiar. The Grand Highlander Hybrid is a larger version of the Highlander Hybrid.
Thanks to its larger exterior footprint, the Grand Highlander Hybrid offers even more space inside for families and their gear. Yet this model lets you have your cake and eat it, too. Or, more precisely, it lets you have that extra space and enjoy excellent fuel economy, too.
The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid pairs a 4-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor, the type of hybrid powertrain Toyota has made famous and now commonplace over decades of production. In the Grand Highlander Hybrid, this efficient setup earns up to 36 mpg combined, all while outputting a healthy 245 horsepower. Think about that fuel economy number again: That’s something associated more with a subcompact car, not a 3-row midsize SUV with room for the entire family.
According to the EPA, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid can cover up to 619 miles between fill-ups. That makes this big, efficient Toyota as adept at road trips as it does shuttling the kids to school and soccer practice.

Passenger Room and Comfort
All Grand Highlander Hybrid models come standard with three rows of seats. With a second-row bench, the Grand Highlander Hybrid can seat up to eight passengers. Or you can opt for a 7-passenger setup with second-row captain’s chairs that provide even more comfort to those in the middle row and easier access to the third row.
It’s in that third row where the grandness of the Grand Highlander Hybrid is apparent. With 33.5 inches of legroom, there’s enough room for adults. And comfort-oriented features go beyond mere space. The Grand Highlander Hybrid is filled with thoughtful features like USB ports throughout the cabin and a baker’s dozen cupholders.
Second-row retractable sun shades are standard, and Limited trims include two 120-volt outlets, including one in the rear — perfect to power items for tailgating.
Features and Technology
The Grand Highlander Hybrid comes with impressive tech features. A 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, along with a wireless charging cradle.
Limited trims have a matching 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster plus an 11-speaker JBL premium audio system. The XLE and Limited trims include 4G Wi-Fi built-in with a 30-day free subscription.
Tri-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats are also standard, and Limited trims bring a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, ventilated front seats, and cool-looking ambient interior lighting.
Another major convenience includes a standard power tailgate — which is height-adjustable and foot-activated in Limited trims.
Materials and Design
Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE models feature Toyota’s durable and comfortable SofTex faux leather upholstery, while Limited trims come with genuine leather. Regardless of your chosen material, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat are standard. Limited trims get a memory function, which is extra convenient if parents routinely swap spots in the driver’s seat.
A panoramic glass roof is available on both trims and is truly impressive in size. We’re also impressed by the Grand Highlander Hybrid’s bounty of cubbies, shelves, and other spots to store things.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The Grand Highlander Hybrid is especially impressive in that it has the same amount of room as the standard Grand Highlander, even with this one’s gas-electric components. Behind the rear seats is 20.6 cubic feet of space — more than enough for multiple bags of groceries. If that grocery run turns into a warehouse-store run, fold the third row to create 57.9 cubic feet. And if your outing turns into a weekend home-improvement project, folding the second row creates an enormous 97.5 cubic feet of space.
