Attractively Overqualified

Arguably the most off-road capable midsize luxury SUV you can buy, the Land Rover LR4 is also an appealing vehicle for those who’ll never leave the well-manicured pavement of suburbia. Available in 2- or 3-row layout, the LR4 combines an exotic aura and distinctive design with people-mover practicality.

With a city/highway combined fuel economy rating of 16 mpg, the LR4 is the thirstiest SUV in its segment, but the road less traveled — even one that leads only to the school drop-off line — is often paved with compromise.

Driving It

From our full review of the 2016 Land Rover LR4: "For such a tall and rugged SUV built on a truck-like body-on-frame chassis, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 is more comfortable and stable than you may expect. Suspension engineers can do wonders these days. And while no amount of work will enable such a big and heavy utility vehicle to defy physics, under normal driving conditions the LR4 manages just fine."

Terrain Response

The LR4 is one of the best off-road SUVs out there, but Land Rover has taken the vehicle’s capability a step further by making it easy to use. Terrain Response has a dial with drawings that show different types of terrain, such as snow, rocks or ruts. Simply match the type of ground you want to cover with the drawing, turn the knob, and Terrain Response does the rest.

Build and Price

The LR4 has a starting price of about $51,000, topping out at about $80,000. Build and price your own Land Rover LR4 to unlock its Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, 5-Year Cost to Own and more.

Consumer Reviews

KBB.com reader and LR4 owner Smitty: "This car is top notch. My only complaint is that the navigation system, like the car itself, is built to be driven off-road. This means that steps which should take one click actually require three or four confirmation steps." Read more consumer reviews of the Land Rover LR4.
