Kia Recalls EV9 Over Loss of Power

2025 Kia EV9

Kia recalled 342 EV9 electric SUVs from model year 2025 because a poorly welded drive shaft can reduce drive power. The recall covers only dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) models.

The company tells federal safety regulators that each motor in the EV9 has a drive shaft that powers its own axle. However, the rear shafts in some EV9s may have a supplier “welding error” that can damage the shaft, leaving that axle unpowered. If that happens, owners will still be able to drive the cars, but their dual-motor vehicle will become a single-motor vehicle.

The sudden, unexpected change in power could contribute to an accident.

Kia says that owners might notice “abnormal driveline noise and illumination of ‘Check AWD/4WD’ warning message” as the problem develops.

Dealers will fix the problem by replacing the entire rear drive unit.
