Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug-in Hybrid Rated at 49 MPG Equivalent

Jeep Wrangler 4xE Concept

A plug-in hybrid version of the iconic Jeep Wrangler is nearly here, and we finally know its fuel economy details. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe reaches dealerships within weeks. This Wrangler will arrive with an EPA sticker certifying it for the equivalent of 49 mpg.

The Wrangler 4xe starts at $47,995, plus a $1,495 destination charge. It pairs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a 17.0-kWh battery. The combination is good for 375 horsepower. The sole transmission is an 8-speed automatic. It’s a legitimate off-roader with features such as a 2-speed transfer case that enables full-time 4-wheel drive and solid Dana 44 axles. It can ford up to 30 inches of water thanks to nearly 11 inches of ground clearance.

The 4xe can travel 21 miles on battery power alone – four fewer than Jeep had predicted, but enough for many potential buyers to make their daily commute without using gasoline, yet still have the options of a road trip (and an off-road trip) on the weekend. In non-EV mode, the EPA says, the hybrid system on the Wrangler 4xe is good for 20 mpg in combined highway/city driving.

A standard Wrangler with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated for 22 mpg combined.
