Jaguar has issued a recall for 2,760 I-Pace electric SUVs from model year 2019 because their high-voltage batteries can overheat, risking a fire. If you own an I-Pace, you’ve seen sentences like that before. But if you own a 2019 I-Pace, you need to pay attention to this one. This is the latest in an escalating series of recalls and won’t be the last.
Jaguar warns drivers to “park and charge their vehicle outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete and for 30 days after the repair has been completed” to minimize risk.
The recall is the fourth affecting some I-Pace models. Jaguar initially recalled I-Pace SUVs from model years 2019 through 2024 after reports of smoke and fire in some parked I-Pace SUVs. The company responded with a software update meant to monitor the battery and diagnose problems.
The company issued two later recalls to correct software installations done improperly at certain dealerships.
Now, Jaguar says engineers may have discovered an additional issue affecting only I-Pace SUVs from the 2019 model year. Jaguar knows of at least three fires in 2019 cars that had already received the software update.
So, the company has a new software package ready for those cars. This one will limit the battery, letting it charge only to 80% of its capacity. That will further limit the range of the cars.
Owners might be tired of recall notices. But this won’t be the last one. Jaguar says “A permanent remedy is under development and will be notified in due course when available.”
