Starting in 2024, buying a Hyundai will be as easy as ordering another toy for the dog, a pair of flip-flops for your vacation, and a refill on shaving cream. In fact, you’ll be able to put them all in one shopping cart. Hyundai will sell cars on Amazon.
At the Los Angeles Auto Show today, the two companies announced a “strategic collaboration” that includes “Amazon launching online sales of Hyundai vehicles in the U.S. in 2024.”
Not Entirely New
The move is an evolution of a long-standing agreement. Amazon.com/Hyundai has been active since 2018. At first, it allowed users to learn about Hyundai vehicles. In 2021, the companies added an order function, which just put users in touch with a local Hyundai dealership to complete the buying process.
Starting in 2024, Hyundai says, “Customers will be able to search on Amazon for available vehicles in their area based on a range of preferences, including model, trim, color, and features, choose their preferred car, and then check out online with their chosen payment and financing options — all within the Amazon experience they already know and trust.”
Buyers can choose to pick up the car at a local dealership or have it delivered. No word on whether shipping is free for Prime members or if you can get it today for an extra $2.99.
Alexa Coming to Hyundai Vehicles
Drivers will be able to use voice commands to “ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, or audiobooks, set reminders, update to-do lists, and check calendars.”
A long list of automakers already offer Alexa integration in some cars.
Since those automakers already have relationships with Amazon, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the idea of an Amazon car store spread. But, so far, Hyundai is the only automaker to offer cars for sale on Amazon. Studies show that car buyers are happier the less time they spend interacting with dealerships.
The car will come from Amazon and with Amazon Alexa. “Starting in 2025, customers who purchase Hyundai’s next-generation vehicles will be able to access the hands-free Alexa experience they have at home while in their car,” Hyundai says.
