Hyundai has a limited-time promotion like a fast food restaurant with a flavor to push. But if you’re considering a new electric vehicle (EV), this one is worth your attention.
Through the end of October, Hyundai is offering EV buyers a complimentary home EV charger and a credit covering much of the installation cost.
Complimentary Charger and Discounted Installation
The deal includes a ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 charger and a $600 installation credit, enough to cover installation for many buyers.
Electric cars can charge from a standard wall outlet (Level 1 charging), but many take all night or longer to fill a battery.
Instead, many owners want a faster Level 2 charger installed in their homes. Level 2 chargers are often smaller than a microwave and can be mounted on a wall. A Chargepoint Home Flex model runs between $549 and $599, depending on the cord required for your specific car.
The fastest form of charging, Level 3 or DC fast charging, isn’t available for home installation because of the immense voltage required. Level 3 chargers are typically found at highway rest stops or in other public settings where they can be used on long trips.
The cost of installing a charger varies regionally and from home to home. A Level 2 charger requires 240 volts of power like an electric dryer and requires 30 to 50 amps of space in a home electric panel, usually taking up two circuit-breaker slots. So, the cost varies based on whether your home has enough capacity in its existing circuit breaker or needs an upgrade.
The Catch? You Have to Finance Through Hyundai
What’s the fine print? The deal doesn’t apply to cash buyers or those who bring their financing. Hyundai says, “This new offer is available to customers who purchase or lease a new 2023 or 2024 IONIQ 5, 2023 or 2024 IONIQ 6 or 2023 Kona Electric through Hyundai Motor Finance beginning Sept. 21 through Oct. 31, 2023.”
Hyundai dealers will walk buyers through the registration process and how to arrange the installation.
The move (temporarily) simplifies one of the hassles of going electric. Car shoppers aren’t accustomed to buying a car and a separate accessory for the car that runs to four figures in total cost and often isn’t included in the same financing arrangement. Hyundai has addressed that issue – at least for some buyers. But, if you want to get in on the deal, you have five weeks to finalize it.
