While releasing few specific details, Honda has announced three more new and extremely efficient additions to its Earth Dreams engine family as well a new 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engines, all of which are turbocharged/direct-injected gasoline units fitted with the automaker’s VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) hardware, consist of a 1.0-liter/3-cylinder, a 1.5-liter/4-cylinder and a hot 2.0-liter/4-cylinder. Each figures to play a significant role in Honda’s future global product portfolio and can be introduced to best meet the requirements of a given specific market to supplement the firm’s existing gasoline, diesel and hybrid powerplants.

Honda claims these new engines will deliver class-leading output and emissions performance, with their fuel efficiency bolstered both by the aforementioned components as well as by enhanced cooling systems and a reduction in power-robbing internal friction. While there’s no word on hard stats for either the 1.0-liter or 1.5-liter, Honda says the new 2.0-liter is tuned to develop in excess of 280 horsepower and has confirmed that it will be used in the Euro-spec Civic R model pictured here testing at the Nurburgring. Although we’ll have to wait to find out exactly where each of these engines – and the new 8-speed autoshifter – will land when they debut in the U.S., their arrival will be most welcome.
