Luxury Midsize SUV Crossover

Here’s What You Get on a Fully Loaded 2024 Acura MDX

The Acura MDX Type S Advance seen from a front quarter angleThe 2024 Acura MDX is the flagship vehicle of the entire Honda empire. Acura is the luxury marque of Honda. As the largest, most well-equipped thing on the Acura lot, it showcases every technology and luxury the incredibly consistent Japanese brand can build.

You might expect that to mean a stratospheric price tag. But what may be most remarkable about the MDX is its approachable price. It starts at $49,850. Last month, the average new car in America sold for $48,528. The top of the entire Honda lineup is accessible for just a little more than the cost of the average new car.

Step up to the most well-equipped version, and prices stay within reason. The 2024 Acura MDX Type S Advance has more power, better handling, and a longer list of both luxuries and technologies than anything else in the Acura lineup. Yet it starts at just $73,500 — more than the starting price of the BMW X5 yet well under what you’d pay for a top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Let’s explore the most upscale 2024 MDX you can buy.

Type S Performance, Advance Tech

In Acura nomenclature, a Type S edition is a high-performance version of a vehicle. Type S models usually come with a more powerful engine (check) and Acura’s sharp Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system for added cornering skill (check). For the flagship, upgrades include an adaptive air suspension system, too. The MDX Type S can be found for $68,150.

An Advance package, on the other hand, is about technology and interior features. Advance models get upgraded sound systems, sometimes bigger and better infotainment screens, and other high-tech goodies.

On the MDX, the Advance adds luxuries like massaging seats and quilted leather upholstery. The Type S Advance starts at $73,500.

ELS Studio Sound Signature Edition Audio System

The ELS sound system of the Acura MDX Type S Advance

Who was the recording engineer behind your current car? It’s a bit of an odd question with most vehicles. But not with the MDX.

Flagship luxury models usually include sound systems with extraordinary numbers behind them, but the system found in the MDX also has an extraordinary name behind it. The ‘ELS’ in the ELS Studio Sound Signature Edition audio system is Elliot Scheiner. He’s the audio engineer behind Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” Steely Dan’s “Aja,” Chaka Khan’s “I Feel for You,” and more. The man has eight Grammys on his resume.

And the MDX has 25 speakers he helped design and tune.

Car critics tend to become accidental sound system critics because we spend a lot of time in cars. The 25-speaker system in the MDX Type S Advance is one of our favorites. Whether your tastes run to the Foo Fighters or B.B. King, Elliot Scheiner has worked with them all, and he designed this system to make their music sound its best.

2 Years Complimentary Maintenance, AcuraLink App Services

Owning a luxury car is only partly about sumptuous surroundings. It’s also partly about personalized treatment from the dealership.

Acura includes two years of 24,000 miles of free regularly scheduled maintenance with the MDX.

Its AcuraLink app gives you smartphone control over your car — you can start and stop the engine, lock and unlock the doors remotely from your phone, and send destinations to the car’s navigation system from a distance. AcuraLink also helps you find the vehicle in a crowded parking lot and even have the car notify your phone if it leaves a designated area (ahem, parents?) You can schedule that free maintenance and see vehicle health reports from anywhere.
