When GMC introduced its 2024 Sierra HD pickup, it promised an off-road version. This week, it over-delivered on that promise, introducing two.
The 2024 Sierra HD is not a brand-new truck, but you could easily mistake it for one, so thorough are the company’s updates to its heavy-duty pickup. A styling refresh inside and out makes it look all-new, and a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel with an impressive 975 lb-ft of torque provides a boost to the engine lineup.
The promised off-road version is the AT4X.
It sits 1.5 inches higher than other Sierra HD trucks thanks to a factory lift kit and uses an electronic locking rear differential, Multimatic DSSV shocks, and 35-inch Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires to give buyers added trail capability. Stronger skid plates — aluminum up front and steel under the transfer case — protect vital components while rock crawling.
New front control arms — upper and lower — are also beefed up for the trail.
But not every new feature is designed for off-road use. A trim-specific Obsidian Rush interior includes massaging, full-grain leather front seats.
The AT4X, though, wasn’t the only off-road version GMC debuted this week.
GM has built a unique relationship with off-road outfitter American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) in recent years. The company often offers limited-edition AEV models with even more off-road enhancements.
Like its Chevrolet cousin, the 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, the Sierra HD Extreme AEV Edition gets stamped steel bumpers with integrated recovery points and a winch mount. Unique 18-inch Salta wheels add new styling, while new heavy-duty steel skid plates “help keep vital components such as the steering gear and transfer case protected on the trail.”
GMC hasn’t yet revealed pricing for either truck.
