GM Warns Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain Owners: Loud Music May Open Your Windows

2022 Chevrolet Equinox

Whether you’re honoring the memory of DMX, rekindling your love of Rachmaninoff, or appeasing the kids’ desire to hear Baby Shark 17 times in a row, there’s one piece of neighborly advice you should always remember: No one outside the car wants you making music selections for them. If you drive a Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain, we need you to watch the volume slightly more than usual.

Loud music, it seems, can drop the windows of certain General Motors SUVs. The company is asking owners of 2018-2021 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers to bring the cars in for a minor repair.

Intense speaker vibrations from loud music can cause the window motor in these cars to lose its memory. That can cause the front windows to lower slightly, and an “Open Then Close Driver Window” warning to appear in the instrument cluster.

It isn’t quite a safety recall, because the issue can harm nothing but your relationship with the rest of the traffic. But GM would like to fix the problem anyway. So it has issued a Technical Service Bulletin instructing dealerships to fix the problem free of charge, and will notify owners through the mail.

Dealerships will install a foam damper between the motor and door panel to fix the problem.

Recall repairs are always free, as are some not-quite-a-recall repairs like the Chevrolet and GMC campaigns. Check our recall center to see if your car has any outstanding issues.
