General Motors has recalled 449,671 trucks and SUVs because they may not warn drivers when their brake fluid is low, a dangerous condition that could reduce braking power.
Recalled models include:
- 2023 GMC Sierra
- 2023 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade
- 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV
- 2023-2024 GMC Yukon
- 2023-2024 GMC Yukon XL
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the problem is “a mismatch” between two pieces of software. It could cause a warning light to fail to activate when brake fluid is low.
Drivers would see a red brake telltale before a total loss of brake fluid, but they might not know when brake fluid was low until it was nearly gone. With low brake fluid, a vehicle will take longer than expected to stop.
Dealers can correct the problem with a software update. Some vehicles can receive updates over the air, while others will need to visit the dealership to have them installed.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
