2017 Honda Clarity: Tops in ZEV range

Set to launch in 12 California cities late this year, the 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan has earned an EPA driving range of 366 miles on a tank of hydrogen. That figure is currently the best of any EV not fitted with a supplemental internal combustion engine and exceeds hydrogen-fueled rivals like the Toyota Mirai (312 miles) and Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell (265 miles). That range also tops the best battery-powered models like the Tesla Model S (321 miles) and Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles).

Honda notes the 5-passenger midsize Clarity will come with the Honda Sensing suite of safety/driver-assist technologies, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, full LED exterior lighting and 18-inch alloy wheels. While pricing has yet to be announced, the Clarity is expected to be offered on retail lease for about $500 per month through 12 approved Honda dealerships in California including six in Southern California, five more in the Bay Area and one in Sacramento. The automaker said it will add more outlets as additional hydrogen fueling stations come online. Refilling the hydrogen tank on the Clarity takes approximately three to five minutes using standard 70 MPa refueling hardware.
