If you’re after an off-road capable, eminently practical wagon, any version of the 2022 Subaru Outback will do the job very well, and for a starting price of just $27,145.

If you want all of that plus the bells and whistles, however, you’ll need to smash the upgrade button until you’re in the Outback Touring XT, which starts from $40,145. There are no packages to add to the Outback Touring XT because it already has all the major features, but there are a few extras you can still add. Here’s a quick breakdown of a build that includes $2,126.84 worth of accessories:

  • Subaru Outback Touring XT: $40,145
  • Wireless phone charging: $292
  • Cargo Net: $79
  • Cargo Organizer: $69.95
  • Cargo Separator: $423
  • Moonroof air deflector: $99.99
  • Remote engine starter: $369.95
  • Second row sunshade: $89.95
  • All-weather floor liners: $132
  • Auto-dimming side mirror with approach light: $273
  • Body side molding: $298
  • Engine under guard, aluminum: $199.95
  • Rear seatback protector: $122
  • Hitch ball mount: $114.95

Now let’s dive into some of the best features of the fully loaded 2022 Subaru Outback Touring XT.

Turbocharged 2.4-Liter Boxer Engine

The XT in the Outback Touring XT’s name signifies the upgrade from the standard 182-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine to the much more engaging 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer shared with the other XT editions as well as the Outback Wilderness.

This punchy, potent engine ensures the Outback never feels sluggish, even when loaded with passengers or cargo, and enables the Outback Touring XT to tow up to 3,500 pounds. It’s paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) by default.

Subaru Symmetrical AWD With X-MODE

While Subaru is famous for its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and the corresponding all-weather/all-road capabilities of its cars, you may not know as much about X-MODE, Subaru’s comprehensive electronic control system that helps maximize traction and control under the worst road conditions.

For example, X-MODE smooths out throttle inputs to help maximize traction, as well as adjusts the gear ratio to optimize engine output, maximizing front-rear coupling force in the AWD system. This helps control vehicle yaw with the dynamics control system, and also maintains speed on tricky descents by controlling the brakes.

EyeSight Driver Assist

While all 2022 Outback models come standard with EyeSight driver assist, the adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and pre-collision braking and throttle management are features that help make any driver safer on the road.

Starlink 11.6-inch Touchscreen Navigation

With a vertical screen layout and standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto built in, the 11.6-inch touchscreen display and Subaru Starlink Multimedia system present a fully modern look and feel to the Outback’s main human-machine interface. Voice commands can control navigation, music, phone calls, and more, and the navigation itself is built in cooperation with TomTom.

180-Degree Front-View Monitor

With its ample ground clearance and burly proportions, the Outback can sometimes be a bit tricky to place precisely on the road (or the trail), but fortunately, the Outback Touring XT includes a feature that can help with that: Subaru’s 180-degree front-view monitor.

Just like a backup camera, but for the area in front of your Outback that you can’t see from the driver’s seat, the front-view monitor helps ensure you’re not running over anything you don’t mean to.
