Ford is partially repeating many old safety recalls this month after discovering that some vehicles marked as repaired were never fixed. The recalls all involve software updates. Ford recently discovered that a system dealers use to update software can sometimes record that it successfully updated a car’s software when that update actually failed.
Many owners who brought vehicles in for software updates may have never received the patches.
In the latest case, Ford has re-recalled just two Maverick pickups from model year 2022. But, for those unfortunate owners, this may be round three of the same recall.
Last April, Ford recalled more than 450,000 vehicles because software inside them could fail to detect a drained battery. As a result, the trucks could shut down and fail to restart. The company successfully repaired most with a software update.
However, in August, Ford learned that 757 of the trucks were marked as updated but never actually received the upload. Therefore, Ford recalled those trucks again.
Now, Ford says, two trucks from that batch still don’t have the correct software update. Owners will need to bring those in a third time.
Dealers have a new method for verifying that an update has been installed successfully this time before returning the truck to the customer, the company says.
