A modified Ford Mustang has been a common sight for nearly 60 years. But a modified Ford Mustang with a factory warranty? That’s something new.
Ford used this week’s annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas to reveal a Ford Performance Parts supercharger kit that takes the 480-horsepower Ford Mustang GT up to a vicious 800 hp. Because it’s a genuine Ford Performance part, the kit doesn’t violate a new car’s warranty.
That’s right — a Mustang more powerful than most Lamborghini Huracan models, under warranty.
The kit gets its power in almost every way possible, from an ECU upgrade to a 3.0-liter 6th generation Whipple twin-screw supercharger, an oversized heat exchanger, a high-flow intercooler pump, and even a larger throttle body.
The kit must be installed by “a dealer or ASE-certified technician” to qualify for warranty coverage, Ford says. And it doesn’t work on the 500-hp Mustang Dark Horse — just GT models equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine. Ford hasn’t released any data on the cost of the kit.
