Ford to Give Free Home Chargers to EV Buyers

Ford Power Pro EV home charger

Ford is giving shoppers who are still on the fence about owning an electric vehicle (EV) one more reason to jump over: The automaker is offering a free home charging system, plus covering the cost of installation.

Called the Ford Power Promise, the offer is available to those buying or leasing a new Ford F-150 Lightning truck, Mustang Mach-E SUV, or E-Transit cargo van. It is good from October 1, 2024, to January 2, 2025. It includes the Ford Charge Station Pro home charger, which retails for $1,310, plus the cost of a standard installation.

Roadside Assistance For Empty Batteries

“Electric vehicle adoption continues to rise in the U.S., but those on the fence about going electric still have common questions about the electric ownership experience — specifically around electric vehicle charging, support, and battery longevity,” the automaker said in announcing the program. “Ford Power Promise is designed to help answer these questions that are top of mind for potential electric vehicle customers.”

EV adoption is steadily increasing, with Americans purchasing nearly 1.2 million electric cars last year, and EV sales setting a record in the second quarter of this year.

In addition to the charging unit and installation, the program includes 24/7 live support and what Ford calls Proactive Roadside Assistance to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E customers. The latter will pick up customers and bring them to the closest charging station or dealership in case of “adverse vehicle events,” such as running out of charge, Ford says.

This isn’t the first time that Ford has made the charging of its EVs easier for potential buyers. Last year, Ford was the first automaker to announce that its vehicles would be able to use Tesla’s expansive network of Supercharger stations.

Most Charging Is Home Charging

But the fact is, most EV owners do most of their charging at home, where juicing up is more convenient and less costly. That makes the Ford Power Promise an attractive option. In addition to the charger, the installation costs will cover wiring of up to 80 feet and installation of a circuit of up to 60 amps. The installation, through Qmerit, will also secure any local permits, Ford says.

For buyers who are not eligible for a home charger—apartment dwellers, for instance—or who choose not to have the installation, Ford is offering a $2,000 incentive instead of the complimentary charger and installation.
