Ford has recalled 295,449 Super Duty trucks equipped with diesel engines and fueled with biodiesel because their fuel pumps can fail if they sit unused too long.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2020-2022 F-250 Super Duty
- 2020-2022 F-350 Super Duty
- 2020-2022 F-450 Super Duty
- 2020-2022 F-550 Super Duty
- 2020-2022 F-600 Super Duty
Ford tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that as the trucks sit unused, biodiesel deposits can form inside the fuel pump. These deposits can cause pump components to fail when restarted.
Ford says the problem is particularly common among trucks that sat still during COVID shutdowns, leaving their tanks full of aging biodiesel.
“Customers may experience extended crank while starting, a Check Engine Light, noise, and reduced engine power,” Ford explains.
Dealers can fix the problem with a software update. The update will increase pump cooling, which should stop the deposits from forming.
