It’s hard to pin down the exact moment a car is born, but Ford has settled on April 17, 1964, for the Mustang. That’s the day Ford showed the car to the world at the New York World’s Fair.
American lusts have never been the same.
Through seven generations, powerful rear-wheel-drive coupes with big shoulder lines and horses on their grilles have filled the dreams of millions.
Sixty years later, Ford says it “is celebrating the heritage of one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history with a limited-edition Mustang 60th Anniversary package.”
But only for a limited few. Ford will sell just 1,965 copies of the Mustang 60th Anniversary package.
Retro-Inspired Badges, Wheels, Mirrors
If the 1964/1965 issue confuses you, welcome to Mustang fandom. Ford originally intended the Mustang as a 1965 model-year car, but started production early. The company produced a small number for the World’s Fair and for sales to the public early in 1964. It then made minor design changes before spooling up production near the end of the year. Automotive historians call that early batch the “1964 ½ Mustang.” 1965 was the first full model year of production.
The 1965 model inspires the 60th Anniversary package. It gets red fender badges and wheel center caps based on that car’s look. Side graphics low on the doors mark “60 Years.” The grille wears a black mesh design like the early Mustangs did 60 years ago.
The 60th Anniversary package is offered in Wimbledon White with white mirror caps or in Race Red or Vapor Blue with silver mirror caps that call back to the classic’s metal side mirrors.
Inside, the instrument panel gets a serialized plaque commemorating the anniversary. The right side of the dash bears its own 60-year badge.
Ford will only sell the package on the 2025 Mustang GT in Premium trim, but true to the original, you can order a coupe or a convertible. Ford says pricing “will be available nearer to the on-sale date.”
The package “will be available to order this summer and is set to hit dealerships nationwide in the fourth quarter of this year.”
Celebrations Today, GTD Applications Open
Mustang fans are gathering today in Charlotte, North Carolina, for a birthday celebration.
Ford will also use the anniversary celebration to open orders for the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD, a barely-street-legal, 800-horsepower version with a price tag of around $300,000. The company says the “application process” for buyers opens today. Ford did not explain what the process would entail. In the past, it has offered low-volume supercars to past buyers first.
