Ford Fusion, Mustang, Lincoln MKZ Recalled for Brake Lights that Don’t Turn Off

Ford has issued a recall for about 200,000 2014-2015  Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans and 2015 Mustang coupes and convertibles because their brake lights may stay permanently lit. This could cause an accident, as other drivers would be unable to tell when the cars were stopping.

The recall applies to cars sold or registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.

The regional restriction has nothing to do with the cars. It’s about weather.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford explains that repeated exposure to high temperatures and humidity can cause a rubber bumper to degrade and separate from the brake pedal. That can leave the brake lights permanently lit. In some cases, drivers can shift affected cars out of park without touching the brake pedal.

Ford dealers will replace the brake pedal and clutch pedal bumpers free of charge.

Recall repairs are always free. Many cars are recalled, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your car has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
